Mary Ann of Ulmarra

2026
60cm x 45cm
Acrylic on board

“Mary Ann of Ulmarra” is based on a photograph taken in 1871 by German photographer John William Lindt. Mary Ann was born in South Grafton in 1849 as Mary Ann Cowan. She married an aboriginal man (Unknown), in a traditional aboriginal ceremony, had one son (born 1872) and was living in Ulmarra at the time. She later married a non-aboriginal man, Leonard Williams in 1877 and had four children and ten grandchildren. She died in 1939 (aged 86).

The headpiece is made from a dingo tail and the necklace is made from a snake skeleton.
